Camp 2008
This year's summer camp was again held in Plum Park, Oxted and we were very fortunate with the weather throughout the week but unfortunately it didn't last and we had to bring home wet tents . The boys gained lots of awards, including Camper, Adventure and DIY badges.
The sixes were named Cyclists, Rowers, Runners and Swimmers. Many cubs also gained their Outdoor Challenge and Hikes and Nights Away awards.
The boys' first job on arrival was to pitch their tents, the leaders having set up the rest of the camp on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we created Six signs for the tents and also made badges. In the evening, following Scouts' Own, we went for a torchlit walk through the adjoining woods.
MONDAY
On Monday we visited the Beaver Water World and then the cubs constructed bivouacs made from natural materials in the woods. As usual they proved to be not quite 100% waterproof! In the evening we had our first practice camp fire.
TUESDAY
Tuesday was the day of our annual visit to Tor Hatch at Shere, a private house, to use the swimming pool in the back garden and the trampoline. After swimming, we had a picnic lunch and then back to camp for the cubs to cook their own food over open fires. Thank you to Paul and Steph for visiting us that evening and running some games with the boys.
WEDNESDAY
We spent Wednesday on the site playing wide games, working on badges and enjoying the Aerial Runway constructed by the leaders. Then in the evening we had a great visit from a falconer with his birds of prey,
THURSDAY
On Thursday we visited the Tandridge Leisure Centre for swimming. In the afternoon we had our camp sports including further sessions on the aerial runway, followed by more wide games.
FRIDAY
Our last day was Friday and we visited a neighbouring farm where the farmer introduced us to to his animals including some llamas. After lunch we went to Oxted to buy presents with left-over pocket money. Friday evening came all too soon, and we welcomed the parents to our camp fire where we were able to present the cubs with their prizes
My grateful thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to making my first camp in charge so successful, in particular to the parents who helped us with transport and to the leaders at camp:
Les, Sheila, Eric, Margret, Sally, John, Michael, Harry, Alex, Nathan and Jack.
