Camp 2010 Brownsea Pack Summer Camp Report 2010
This year’s summer camp was again held in Plum Park, Oxted and we had great weather until the last morning when we awoke to rain, but it soon cleared letting us get the tents down dry.
The boys gained lots of awards, including Camper, Animal Carer and Map Reader badges.
The sixes were named after superheroes -Batman, Superman, Ironman and The Incredible Hulk. Many cubs also gained their Outdoor Challenge and Hikes and Nights Away awards.
The boys’ first job on arrival was to pitch their tents, the leaders having set up the rest of the camp on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we created Six signs for the tents and also made badges.
In the evening, following Scouts Own, we went for a torchlit walk through the nearby woods.
On Monday we visited Beaver World and for the first time in eleven years actually saw a beaver!
We spent the rest of the day playing wide games and working on badges.
In the evening we had a practice camp fire.
Tuesday was the day of our annual visit to Tor Hatch at Shere, a private house, to use the swimming pool in the back garden and the trampoline. After swimming we had a picnic lunch and then back to camp for the cubs to cook their own food over open fires.
We spent Wednesday on the field- the cubs constructed bivouacs made from natural materials in the woods and as usual they proved to be not quite 100% waterproof!
The afternoon was to be a new venture for all of us as the boys became animators and produced short films using lego figures. The results were amazingly good and we hope to show the parents the finished films at our camp evening in the Autumn.
The cubs also had a great time using the Aerial Runway put up by the leaders.
On Thursday we visited the Tandridge Leisure Centre for swimming. In the afternoon we had our camp sports which included further sessions on the aerial runway, This was followed by their favourite activity- wide games.
Our last day was Friday and we visited a neighbouring farm where we met the Llamas.
After lunch the cubs went to Oxted to buy gifts with left-over pocket money.
Friday evening came all too soon, and we welcomed the parents to our camp fire where we were able to present the cubs with their prizes
My grateful thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to making the camp so successful, in particular to the parents who helped us with transport and to the leaders at camp:
Alan, Margret, Sally, John, Michael, Rhiannon, Jack, Dave and Luke.
